If you ever take a stroll of history in Tainan City, “Ying Restaurant” with rich Japanese culture that was completed with renovation in 2013 is a scenic area which you should not miss. The restaurant resembles the scenes from the movie, where old brick-houses reconnect the relation between Taiwan and Japan while the mottled old brick-houses are injected with new vitality.

The “Ying Restaurant” was located in downtown during Japanese Ruling Period and was near the Tainan Prefecture Hall, City Hall, Tainan Prefection Meeting, City Council, Town Hall, Police Department, and Banks as well as important government agencies and public buildings. It became quite famous site for social interaction in the city back then and was renowned as the dream restaurant of “underground decision-making center” in Tainan. The term, “underground decision-making center” shows how important of premise Ying Restaurant was for the intelligence exchange in upper class society. Some issues that could not be solved on the table of officials could always be resolved in harmony here with the company of food and drinks. At night, the incoming rickshaws carrying officials and rich people in glamorous clothing as well as the gueisa referred from “shimmachi” constantly come to celebrate and drink. It was a place for Japanese officials to cleanse a day of fatigue and also the assigned restaurant for food supply when the Crown Prince of Japan came to visit Tainan and settled in the official residence in 1923.

”Ying Restaurant” was built by Hisayoshi Amano on the land purchased during Japanese Ruling Period. The restaurant occupies 200 level ground and the greeting lobby is designed as a Japanese garden with a small bridge, stream, stones and rare rocks. The “mid building” and “inner building” to the west wing of the garden build in 1923 were the main building and there is an outdoor well between the two buildings. The former entrance to the restaurant is designed in the mid building. The “surface building” build to the south wing of the garden in 1928 and the “mid building” connect to each other and form a complete building. The building of “Ying Restaurant” adopts traditional Japanese wooden structure with the main rooftop layered with bricks and the ridge is sealed by tiles. Some buildings are two-floor with eaves. The lower level uses tiles as slanted layout while the wall of the building are applied with large area of opening to preserve spacious ventilation. The building emphasizes heavily on the structure and style.

After World War II, the land and building of Ying Restaurant were registered by the Government as State-owned according to Land Act and in 1999 it was registered under the Republic of China and National Tainan First Senior High school as the administrative agency. It was once used as the dormitory for National Tainan First Senior High School and then became obsolete. The main building undergone much weathering was collapsed when the Typhoon Fung-wong hit Taiwan in 2008 and only one two-floor building remained. By 2012, Tainan City Government consolidated with previous Tainan County and City started designing Ying Restaurant and renovated into an open plaza. The project started on March 1st and by the end of July, 2013, the whole building after renovation was re-opened with only one third of the scale from previous building were preserved.
